ANNIEChester Musicals Director: Peter Mulley Musical Director: Hannah Peel Choreographer: Sarah-Louise Sutton How appropriate for Chester Musicals to perform Annie in the show's 30th anniversary year when the very first production was at the Goodspeed Theatre in Chester, Connecticut. So popular is this show that no fewer than 125 young girls auditioned for the leading role in this production in the Brindley Theatre. The society was able to select two sets of orphans (team A and team B) each of whom has an enviable CV of previous shows and stage experience, some having commenced dancing lessons at two and three years of age. So much talent from such youngsters is exceptional and bodes well for the future of musical theatre in the Chester area - if only they had a theatre in which to perform! In the title role, Ellie Waite did not put a foot - or a word - wrong, as befits a fourteen year old with nine years' experience. Her orphan colleagues all gave delightful performances with brisk routines and lusty choruses. Not to be outdone by the youngsters, the adult characters were portrayed in fine style; Colin Hodson made an admirable Warbucks, Jenefer Baker brought elegance and splendid vocal talent to the role of Grace Farrell, Gwen Cowan was incorrigible as the bullying Miss Hannigan whilst Neil Silcock and Victoria Iremonger connived well as the swindling Rooster and Lily St. Regis. Mike Heathcote was immaculate as Warbuck's butler, Drake and John Coppack gave a sincere interpretation to the role of President Roosevelt. The musical numbers moved at a good tempo with lively chorus routines and orchestral accompaniment. The costumes by Excel Costumes were good, as were the sets by Scenic & Property Hire of Newport. All aspects came together to provide an enjoyable evening's entertainment, after which I had the pleasure of presenting NODA Service Awards to Susan & Peter Oldfield, John Coppack and George Kerr.
